Melchers China Sponsors Youth Education with Shanghai Sunrise
Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said: “Education is a human right with immense power to transform.” China has implemented a nine-year compulsory education system, providing more than 100 million school-age children and teenagers with the right to free and equal access to education. However, after graduating from junior middle school, many teens, some of whom even have excellent grades, are forced to abandon school due to financial difficulties of their families. Even in Shanghai, there are still numerous poor families struggling to pay for their children’s tuition fees.
As one of the earliest foreign companies to come to Shanghai, Melchers China has long been concerned about the development of the local community. On October 26, 2023, Melchers China donated 39,000 RMB (around 5,500 $) to the Education Sponsorship Programme initiated by the charity organisation “Shanghai Sunrise”, which is a registered programme under the Shanghai Charity Foundation (SCF) and is dedicated to raising funds for educational scholarships for underprivileged students in the Shanghai area.

Melchers China’s donation will be used to support a pair of twin brothers from a low-income family in Shanghai. Both brothers scored over 600 out of 750 points in this year’s Graduation Examination for Junior High School, but could not continue the senior high school due to their family’s financial difficulties. The future looked bleak for the two teenagers with outstanding academic scores. Melchers hopes to donate and help them continue their high school studies so that they could have the opportunity later to receive higher education. On November 26, Melchers China CEO Anton Melchers and Senior Finance Manager Kevin Li attended a pairing ceremony organized by Shanghai Sunrise and met the two sponsored students in person. They chatted, got to know the twin brothers, and encouraged them to continue their studies without distractions, pursue their dreams and become positive contributors to the society.
